The Greater Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church (GMOMBC) began on January 21, 1996 at the Baptist Student Center on the campus of Southern University. A congregation of 134 members assembled under the leadership of Pastor S. C. Dixon with our adopted motto, “The Church Where Peace Abides”. On May 6, 1996, our Church was incorporated with the State of Louisiana. Our Pastor, directed by the Holy Spirit, led our congregation one year and four months later, on May 1, 1997, to purchase our current Church home at 3155 Victoria Drive. Words cannot express the boundless faith exhibited by our leader’s steadfastness in his vision, and daily “Walking by Faith and not by Sight”. Our facility consists of three buildings: the Church building – which includes the sanctuary, classrooms; the Family Center – a full-size gymnasium, classrooms, kitchen and cafeteria/fellowship center, and the Educational building, which also has classrooms and offices.

With the guidance of our spirit-filled Pastor, Reverend S. C. Dixon, Greater Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church has been a trailblazer in carrying out the “Great Commission” of Jesus Christ. Throughout the country, trails have been blazed in the preaching and teaching of the gospel to the world. Pastor Dixon’s leadership has been evident through biblical discipleship to believers; baptizing of new converts; observing the Lord’s Supper and meeting the total needs of all mankind. Each year the Lord is endowing our Pastor with a new vision of where He wants him to lead his people. Not only are we actively led in Sunday Worship, Prayer Services, Church-In-Training, Nursing Home Ministry, Health Awareness Ministry, Social Service and the Armstrong-Ellis Scholarship, but God also led our visionary leader in 2008 to being a Saturday Morning Street Witnessing, where all of the ministries actively participate. Out of pain, God directed Pastor Dixon in December 2008 to begin a new program designed to provide service to the needy children, the Blake Benjamin Stewart Infant Fund.

In addition to providing Spiritual growth, Pastor Dixon also had a vision to address the academic needs of the children in our community. Therefore, in August of 1997, the Greater Mount Olive Day Care opened with one student. Because of its continued growth in 2001, the leadership thought it best to rename the Day Care to Greater Mount Olive Christian Academy. In May of 2005 the academy was approved as a Non-Public Private School in East Baton Rouge Parish. Presently, the Academy is serving Pre-K thru the 3rd Grade.

Greater Mount Olive strived on being affiliated to religious organizations whose standards were to follow the Word of God. Those organizations were:

  • 1996 - 4th District Baptist Association
  • 1998 – Antioch Baptist General Association
  • 2001 – Emmanuel Baptist Church Aide Association
Presently we are members of the following since 1999:
  • Louisiana Home & Foreign Missions Baptist State Convention, Inc. National Baptist Convention of America, Inc.
  • and 2006 – Third District Bogue Chitto Association.

On January 23, 2000 in a 5:00 pm ceremony, the Cornerstone of Greater Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church was laid. During this ceremony, a Time-Capsule containing memorabilia of the Chronicles of this great church was placed behind the Cornerstone to be opened in the year of 2050.

In 2000, the church made some necessary improvements by replacing the air condition compressors, restructuring the choir stand, installed a new innovative sound system, made improvements to the walls of the gymnasium and purchased and erected our church steeple.

In May of 2001, Phase I of GMO renovation project began spanning a period of approximately 30 days. During that time, Pastor Leo D. Cyrus, graciously allowed us to Worship at the New Hope Baptist Church. Phase II renovations were completed in 2004 which included the offices and classrooms in the main building. Between June 2002 and November 2005, GMO purchased just under 10 acres of land across the street from the church and another acre down the street. After the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, hundreds of thousands of people were without homes, and God in his infinite wisdom directed Greater Mount Olive to open her doors and permitted FEMA to house 118 Trailers on her property, allowing displaced families to live in the Mount Olive Gardens. Our original church sign was also damaged resulting in our new informative Digital Marquee.

In December 2010, a major reconstruction of the church parking lot began. Electrical gates were installed and completed in January 2011 at the entrance and exit of the parking lot.

Our church growth continues with more than 1000 disciples on roll. Assisting Pastor Dixon is an Executive Committee, Associate Ministers, 18 Deacons, an Administrative Staff, and various Ministry Leaders, along with an enthusiastic, loving and dedicated congregation.

Therefore, we thank God for the Holy Spirit who as guided our visionary Pastor thus far, and we praise God for what he has done, is doing and what is yet to come.
